Reelin' in the Years
Tell us about yourself:
While I don’t actually live in Sunbury, I’m not too far away – you’ll find me in Strathmore, in Melbourne’s north-west. I like to think of myself as “Sunbury-adjacent”!
Music has always been my lifelong passion. I’ve spent decades collecting records (and yes, I eventually made peace with CDs), and I’m proud to say I own every single song that’s ever made the Top 40 since the very first published chart in 1958. And just to prove I’m a true chart tragic, I’ve collected the actual charts as well! Some people collect stamps… I collect soundtracks to people’s lives.
Sharing that music on radio is one of my greatest joys – there’s nothing quite like helping listeners travel back in time to relive the songs that remind them of their youth, their first love, or even their first heartbreak.
But music isn’t my only obsession. I also run a boutique home cinema, “The Rapallo,” where locals gather to watch films and then carry on the conversations afterwards through a film discussion group. It’s a lovely way of bringing people together through stories on the big screen.
These days I’m retired, which simply means I get to enjoy the things I love most – spinning great music on my weekly show, indulging my film addiction, and convincing people that yes, keeping every Top 40 song since 1958 really is a hobby and not a medical condition!
Tell us all about your show:
My show is all about reeling back the years from the 50s through to the 80s – four decades of classic hits that never grow old. Each week I dive into a genuine Melbourne music chart from the era and count up the Top 20 songs just as they were heard at the time.
As a lifelong chart enthusiast (some might say “tragic”), I love bringing those songs to life with stories, memories, and a relaxed style that makes each countdown feel like catching up with an old friend. For many listeners, these songs aren’t just music – they’re milestones.
As I often say, there comes an age when the memories are the greatest things we have.
Why should you tune in? Because whether you were there the first time around, or you’re just discovering the magic of these songs, it’s a journey through the soundtrack of our lives.
Requests? Sorry, no. Even I don’t have a say in the music I play as the shows follow strictly the music chart on which I’m focused. I hope in time to open up a text feedback line so my listeners can become pro-active with the show and the memories it brings them.
So join me each week as we celebrate the Classic Top 40 years – the music that defined an era and, for many, the best times of their lives.
What’s your all-time favourite album?
Neil Diamond – Hot August Night
Do you play a musical instrument?
Absolutely not – and trust me, the world is a better place for it! I’m completely tone deaf. If I ever picked up a guitar, people would run for cover; if I tried the trumpet, the neighbours would call the council; and if I sat at a piano, it would probably sue me for cruelty.
That’s why I stick to collecting and playing music other people perform brilliantly. I figure it’s safer for everyone if I let the professionals handle the instruments, and I just provide the enthusiasm (and the volume knob).
What’s your favourite movie or TV show?
The Italian movie Cinema Paradiso from 1988
